6 August, 2016. The Tonga Broadcasting Commission will broadcast live the Rio Olympics opening ceremony today, 6th August, 2016 at 12:00 noon.
Tonga’s first Olympic Taekwondo athlete Pita Taufatofua will be the country’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Taufatofua is one of the seven athletes representing Tonga in Rio, along with swimmer ‘Amini Fonua who represented Tonga in the 2012 London Olympics Game, Irene Prescott, Siueni Filimone, Taina Halasima, Arne Jensen and Lusitania Tatafu.
Tongan officials to Rio include the Team Manager Michael Bloomfield, Dr Sione Latu, Secretary General of TASANOC Takitoa Taumoepeau and Physiotherapist Alison Donnan.
The opening ceremony will be held at the famous Maracanã stadium at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that was modernized for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and can hold up to 74,738 spectators.
