Privy Council approves the ratification of Kigali Amendment Featured

9 August, 2018. The Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communication conducted a one day training workshop on the Kigali amendment. Participants at the workshop included representatives from the Ministries of Customs and Revenues, Infrastructure, Education, Health, Fisheries and Tonga Fire Services.
CEO for MEIDECC Mr. Paula Ma’u, strummed a joyful note during his opening remarks by announcing the approval of the Kigali Amendment by Privy Council which is a significant element, parties to the Montreal Protocol have for.
He also stated the importance of collaborative work in order to effectively tackle the impacts of climate change in Tonga and the Pacific.
The main purpose of the workshop was awareness building on Ozone and on open forum for discussions on the Kigali amendment.
During these discussions, the Head of Ozone Depleting Substances Division, Mr. Uikelotu Vunga, emphasized Tonga’s obligations to the Montreal Protocol under the Kigali amendment as well as the significance of enforcing the Ozone Layer Protection Act, 2010.
The workshop also focused on seeking pathways and strategies for Tonga in meeting and maintaining compliance with the Montreal Protocol.
The National Ozone Layer Protection Unit from the Department of Climate Change tirelessly continues its efforts toward safeguarding the Ozone Layer so as to protect all life on Earth and prevent further harmful impacts brought on by Climate Change. The Mission continues.
